airport LiverpoolA security incident led to an unfortunate turn of events. Around 1,000 passengers were stopped from boarding their flights at John Lennon Airport of Liverpool due to the security hitch.

A technical problem with one of the scanning machines at the departure lounge forced the evacuation of passengers at about 12:00 BST.

However, the passengers have since been told they can return to get their luggage rechecked, but to expect some delays.

An airport spokesman said there was no threat to passenger safety.

Officials said the problem was spotted “within a matter of minutes”, but that a re-screening process was “necessary in order to ensure security compliance”.

Airport authorities said the cause of the scanner failure was being investigated.
