An unidentified 24-year-old climbed, toppled and smashed a 126-year-old statue to bits while trying to take a selfie with it.
The particular statue was of child-king Dom Sebastiao which is a 126-year-old statue of a Portuguese king. It was completed in 1890. Dom Sebastiao died in battle in 1578, at the age of 24 when he waged a crusade against Morocco. His body was never identified which gave rise to the old legend that he would one day return to claim his throne and save the Portuguese from the turmoil.
The man tried to flee the scene, but was caught by police and will appear before a judge at a later date.
Isn’t it high time we think before snapping anything and everything that comes our way! Selfies are becoming both ally and enemy to the art world at the same time.
