Seniors Card holders can travel for free on ACTION buses during ACT Seniors Week 2016, from Saturday 12 March to Sunday 20 March, ACT Minister for Transport and Municipal Services Meegan Fitzharris said.
“Providing good public transport is vital for ensuring older Canberrans have access to services and to their family and social networks,” Minister Fitzharris said.
“Passengers with a combined Seniors and MyWay card will be able to travel for free during Seniors Week. To ensure data is captured for transport planning purposes, seniors still need to tag on and off the bus but no fare will be charged. Those without a combined Seniors and MyWay card can just present their ACT or interstate Seniors Card to the driver.
“There are several great events for seniors throughout the week, such as the Seniors Expo and Chief Minister’s concert at Thoroughbred Park, so we hope the free travel encourages participation.
“The flexible transport bus service will be providing a free shuttle service from 9am to 3pm on Thursday 17 March which will service the Woden Bus Station, City Bus Station, EPIC Park & Ride and will continue through to Thoroughbred Park for the Seniors Expo.”
Minister Fitzharris said the ACT Government is committed to providing accessible public transport.
“Over 71 per cent of the ACTION bus fleet includes easy-access buses, while all the buses in the flexible transport bus service fleet are wheelchair accessible and proving a popular way for older Canberrans to travel. Over 14,000 journeys have been completed in the past 12 months, with the majority of older Canberrans travelling to their local shops, to appointments or to visit family and friends.”
Seniors interested in arranging a combined ACT Seniors MyWay card can visit any Access Canberra Shopfront, ACT Public Library or the Council of the Ageing Office.
