On Wednesday, several cooperation agreements were signed between Cambodia and the Philippines during the visit of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte to Cambodia. These agreements were on tourism, sports exchanges and combating transnational crime.
The memoranda of the agreements were signed after talks between Duterte and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen. Regarding the Philippines’ plan, the country’s Tourism Secretary Wanda Corazon Tulfo-Teo said that it focuses on air connectivity.
She said that they would like to have a direct flight from Phnom Penh to the Philippines. She said that with this direct flight, arrival of Cambodian people to the Philippines will increase. President Duterte said that he will encourage Filipinos to visit Cambodia at least once in their lifetime to see the famous Angkor Wat temple. Philippine Trade and Industry Secretary Ramon Lopez said that there are lots of scopes of trade expansion between the two countries.
The spokesman of Hun Sen said that the two leaders did not discuss the tricky disputes in the South China Sea involving several ASEAN members and China. Since Duterte’s coming to power in June this year, tensions have eased between China and the Philippines. Duterte’s visit in Cambodia was his first. Manny Pacquiao, a famous Filipino boxer was a member of his entourage who was warmly welcomed in Cambodia.
