World’s only ‘ice library’ has opened in Russia. To visit this library, one just needs a jacket, not a library card. Unlike other libraries, one won’t find any books and DVD releases here. Instead, giant blocks of ice with quotes carved onto the side of the slab makes this library unique.
As of now, 400 quotes in varied languages like German, Chinese, Korean, and one in English that reads “the journey is the reward” have made their place in this exclusive Russian library. This library is situated on the shores of Lake Baikal in Siberia. Here average temperature remains minus 21 degrees in winter and the waterbody remains frozen for six months of the year.
To quote Maxim Khvostishkov, local tourism head and ice librarian, ”Last year we announced we would create the Ice Library of Wonders, and asked people to send us their dreams and wishes,”.
However, the library is temporary as long as the lake remains frozen. In April, it’ll disappear into the lake. The library was opened in an official ceremony last weekend which was attended by government officials.
