In this regard the airline has signed an agreement with the Port Management Office of Chongqing allowing it to commence direct flights to the Australian city from Chongqing’s Jiangbei International Airport.
Starting December 20, 2013, Sichuan flights will operate twice a week using an Airbus A330 aircraft. Services will leave Chongqing every Tuesday and Friday at 0100, arriving into Sydney at 1400. The return leg will depart at 2145, getting back into Chongqing at 0445 the next morning.
The route will mark Sichuan Airlines’ second move into the Australian market. The carrier currently operates direct flights between Chengdu and Melbourne, and will soon resume services between Chongqing and Chengdu, allowing passengers from Sydney to connect onwards to the capital of Sichuan province.
The new flights also coincide with the launch of a 72-hour visa waiver scheme for travellers to Chongqing. Citizens of more than 40 countries, including Australia, will be able to visit the city for three days without obtaining a visa, provided they hold an onward air ticket.
