China is ready to build the world’s most dangerous railway that will run from Chengdu, capital of Southwest China’s Sichuan province, through Ya’an and Kangding, and enter Tibet via Qamdo.
The Sichuan-Tibet Railway will be the second railway which will run in the Southwest China’s Tibet autonomous region after the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. This railway spanning of 1,700 kilometers will help to have an easy communication with the mainland China and Tibet.
China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group Co Ltd is monitoring the plans and designing the tracks. The breathtaking landscape and dangers will face by the Chinese engineers. This will be the greatest risk in the world to erect this railway line. The disaster management team is also formed to look after how to cope up with the natural hazards in the world’s most geologically active areas of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
The Sichuan-Tibet Railway line will run from Chengdu through Ya’an and Kangding and enter in Tibet via Qamdo. It will set out through Nyingchi and Shannan before arriving Lasha, the capital of Tibet. The estimated cost of the construction will be 250 billion yuan (about $36.88 billion).
The construction of Sichuan-Tibet Railway line has begun on the two ends of the railway. The section between Chengdu and Ya’an is expected to open in June 2018. The viability study on the section of Sichuan-Tibet Railway between Ya’an and Kangding has been completed. The section between Lhasa and Nyingchi is under construction. But the section from Kangding to Nyingchi is the most difficult and risky and the construction will take at least 7 years. The construction is expected to begin in 2019.
The Sichuan-Tibet Railway will be a chief railway communication line in the western China rail network. It is connecting Tibet and more developed central and eastern regions. The railway speed will be from 160 km per hour to 200 km per hour. On completion of Sichuan-Tibet Railway, the journey time by train from Chengdu to Lhasa will shorten from 48 hours to about 13 hours.
But the limitation for Sichuan-Tibet Railway is the geological structures which can cause earthquake and landslips. Sichuan-Tibet Railway will connect all the places which are actively prone to earthquake like Longmen Mountain and Yarlung Zangbo River seismic belts.
