Lately, C. Zangpo, the secretary of Sikkim Tourism, has declared that a new tourism policy will soon get the green signal of Sikkim Tourism after it gets the approval from the government. Intended to draw higher number of tourism in terms of investment in the state, the proposed draft policy has few recommendations for the investors regarding financial incentives.
To quote Zangpo, “there are certain financial incentives involved in the draft, so government approval is required. We are currently waiting for the government stamp for the policy.” The main purpose of devising this new tourism policy is to lure tourists in great numbers to the state and establish the tourism economy to its original self.
Gorkhaland agitation had impacted the tourism in Sikkim badly. Zangpo exposed more by saying, “It affected quite adversely. Till June 18, Sikkim received 11.75 lakh tourists. After that for next 100 days it was just zero,” he said. “However, people have started coming back slowly”.
Talking more on the government’s initiation on developing Sikkim tourism, Zangpo said that the state is prioritizing more on eco-tourism and homestay tourism. Reportedly the state tourism board has supported as many as 730 homestays all over the state by now and most of them are extensively well-liked by the tourists visiting the state. “Our focus on eco-tourism and homestay infrastructure has helped in curtailing the rural-urban exodus,” Zangpo said while talking about this subject.
