Christmas vacationers were caught in fierce storms that raced through South and Midwest killing at least six people and injuring many others.
An extremely large tornado moved through northern Mississippi. The tornado touched down near Clarksdale. The storm moved quickly through to Tennessee according to the National Weather Service. Three homes were destroyed by the storm said the state management emergency director Gary Rogers. Two people were killed in Perry Country, Tennessee, southwest of Nashville. One more person was killed in Arkansas.
Some building suffered major damage in Sardis 45 miles east of Clarksdale, and in Holly Springs, more than 90 minutes to the northeast.
Car commuters suffered serious injuries; a 7 yrs old boy was killed in the storm in his car while he was going for his Christmas holiday. At least 40 people across six Mississippi counties were injured in the storms, according to Greg Flynn, a spokesman for the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency. At least four people were injured in the unincorporated area of Coahoma County known as Bellview, Board of Supervisors President Paul Pearson said. One person was in critical condition. Storms in Arkansas killed a woman and trees were uprooted and roofs of many houses were blown off.
