Jakarta witnessed several explosions and just like Turkey, suicide bomber was responsible for one of the several blasts in the centre of the Indonesian capital. In all six bombs went off and four people died in an ongoing gunfight, the death toll may increase.
One blast was seen in the Starbucks Cafe. However security forces entered the building. Shooting stopped soon after according to Reuter’s photographer. The Cafe’s windows were blown out. Three people were lying dead on the road. A shooter was on the roof and the police was trying to gun him down.
One explosion went off in front of a Sarinah shopping mall. Also the police post outside the mall blew off said police forces. A separate explosion was heard in the western suburb of Palmerah but no other information was available yet.
The Indonesian police have been involved in cracking down threat posed by Islamist militants and counter-terrorism groups who have suspected links to Islamic States. The country harbours the largest Muslim population in the world and the vast majority of the population follows moderate religious practices. Since 2000 the police force has been active in destroying domestic military attack. But with the recent attacks it is suspected that there may be a resurgence of the military groups. In 2009 Jakarta witnessed the last major attack at the JW Marriot and Ritz Carlton.
