Meeting in early August to discuss the package of six new sports to be added to the 2020 Olympic Games, the the International Olympics Committee have officially announced that all six of the games proposed will be added to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Breaking with tradition of the home country electing one new sport, the six new sports to be added by the hosts of the 2020 games will be: skateboarding, surfing, karate, climbing and baseball/softball. As the historic home of karate and a nation of baseball-fanatics, the Japanese hosts of the upcoming games are sure to wow visitors with their traditions and quirky celebrations when it comes to these sports.
This will bring almost 500 additional athletes and 18 events to the 2020 games.
Tokyo 2020 President Yoshiro Mori said, “The inclusion of the package of new sports will afford young athletes the chance of a lifetime to realise their dreams of competing in the Olympic Games – the world’s greatest sporting stage – and inspire them to achieve their best, both in sport and in life.”
As the 2016 Olympics kick off, Japan is already stepping in to the spotlight as the host of the next games.
