The 15th annual Skal Sustainable Tourism Awards took place on Sunday 30th October 2016 at the opening ceremony of the 77th Skal World Congress held at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco. The awards were first presented in 2002, when the United Nations declared 2002 as the Year of Ecotourism and the Mountains. The awards were launched to emphasize best practices in tourism around the world.
This year at the awards, 42 projects competed in eight categories and the winners were officially announced and congratulated by Skal International Vice Presidents, David Fisher and Susanna Saari. A panel of three key experts evaluates the projects independently. The criteria for the evaluation are based on:
