The pioneering NZ-based global tourism company has launched ‘50 Years of Fun’ celebrating Skyline’s journey over the years to becoming one of New Zealand’s iconic attractions. A series of events and competitions will culminate in a gala celebration in November.
Skyline Queenstown introduced New Zealand’s first gondola system, and the first trip up Bob’s Peak took place on November 17, 1967. Overlooking Lake Wakatipu, Cecil Peak and The Remarkables Mountain Range, Skyline Queenstown is the perfect vantage point to take in the year-round alpine resort’s surrounding area and it rapidly became one of the country’s top tourist attractions.
In the past 12 months, more than 850,000 passengers have ridden the Skyline Queenstown’s Gondola. Over the years, the total has risen to almost 17 million passengers.
Skyline Enterprises chairman Mark Quickfall says the timing of the 50th anniversary couldn’t be more poignant as the company begins a significant NZ$100 million redevelopment, including a state-of-the-art 10-seat gondola and complex expansion.
“Skyline has been delivering incredible experiences to Queenstown’s domestic and international tourists for 50 years,” he says.
With 220-degree panoramic views spanning from Coronet Peak to The Remarkables mountain range, over the town and across Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak and Cecil Peak, there is no better place to experience the beauty of Queenstown than Skyline Queenstown. The views are just the beginning with exciting activities available for all levels of adrenalin seekers from luging to mountain biking or hiking.
