Smog in Beijing forces red alert in cityMost of Beijing was shut as it issued a red alert for pollution owing to its highest level of smog that will continue for till Thursday.


Tourists and visitors in the city wore masks to protect themselves. Only a few ventured out as the government declared that unless it is absolutely necessary no one should go outdoors. But some tourists wearing masks posed for selfies with smog background in parks.


The Beijing’s Municipal Bureau of Environmental Protection has issued a statement saying that severe pollution could cloak the city for several days. Schools have been closed and the number of cars on road has been restricted now.



Beijing’s air quality stood to 250 in the morning which is “very unhealthy” , 10 times higher than the World Health Organization’s recommendation.



Beijing has no other options but to take immediate action on it growing level of pollution. Car usage has been cut to half and allowing odd or even number license plates on road. At one time heavy vehicles including garbage trucks are banned from streets. Polluting industrial activities have been banned along with fireworks and outdoor barbecues. Grilled food is very popular in Beijing and sold in streets openly.



citizens of Beijing are wondering why the red alert has been issued so late when air quality measured by the U.S. Embassy touched 500 last week which is ” beyond index”. Local sources however argue that since this smog is expected to last over 72 hours, red alert has been issues.


They country is heavily depends upon coal for heating homes and fuel power plants, that increases during winters. China is the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitter. But the country said that it aims to cut its emission by half till 2030.

    don’t be like the daily papers that publish only police blotter stories whenever something bad happens. what about the good things that happen that enhance the visitor experience?
