The plane was travelling from Trinidad to Miami on Tuesday morning when the pilot requested clearance for the emergency landing. Turks & Caicos said the pilot reported a fire and said the left engine was smoking and dripping fuel.
A local newspaper showed images of firefighters spraying water on the American Airlines jet while it sat on the runway. Incidentally, it was not smoking and showed no obvious signs of damage.
