The PRO of North Western Railways, Gopal Sharma said, “This train will be run as a passenger train, the route to be decided after the trial run. This is the initiative by the Railways to make use of alternative source of energy.” He also added that only after the trial run, they will be able to determine the profit, which is to be expected from this initiative by the railways.
Indian railways have been experimenting with various alternative energy-sources for the past few years. They have already introduced dual-fuel concept, where they used both CNG and diesel to pull the train. Currently, the train has proved to be a hit in the Rohtak-Rewari section under the Delhi division of railways. Biodiesel and natural gas were also used to run some more trials. According to survey, the dual-fuel concept is being fruitful in cost-cutting and saving fuel.
Nowadays, Indian railway is putting more focus on saving energy by using the infinite sources. Studies suggest that solar panels on trains can save almost 90,000 litres of diesel consumption and it can also save the environment from being emitted with 200 tons of carbon dioxide per year.
