In contrast to the last year, the total economic impact of spending during Songkran 2017 holiday was 45.428 billion Baht (US$1.3 billion), as confirmed by the Thailand Ministry of Tourism and Sports. It was a 14.40 percent increase over the last year. During the Thai New Year period, several destinations witnessed noticeable growth in tourism sector.
Thailand attracted 695,894 overseas tourists which generated more than 36.941 billion Baht (US$1 billion) during the Songkran 2017 holiday period which started from 11th April till 17th April. This accounts an up of 10.9 percent and 16.40 percent respectively. On the other hand, domestic tourism resulted in 3.03 million trips and 8.487 billion Baht (US$242 million) revenue up 3.36 percent and 6.45 percent, respectively.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) collaborated with the Ministry of Tourism and Sports to organize and support celebrations of Songkran 2017 in 14 destinations like Bangkok, Chon Buri, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Ayutthaya, Songkhla (Hat Yai), Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phuket, Nong Khai, Samut Prakarn, Suphanburi, Nakhon Phanom, Lampang, and Sukhothai. In Khon Kaen, Chon Buri and Ayutthaya, Minister of Tourism and Sports, H.E. Mrs. Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, had personally participated in the Songkran 2017 celebrations. She actively took part in setting up a new record for the “human wave” activity where she covered one-kilometers-long strip on Khao Neao Road in Khon Kaen.
The first day of the activity lured more than 100,000 revelers. It all started in 2009 to represent unity. Now the event attracted over 120,000 revelers on the second day and concluded with 135,271 participants on the last day of the celebration.
