South Korean tourism chief resigns after ‘massage’

German-born South Korean tourism chief resigned on Friday amid allegations that he had visited an erotic massage parlour in Japan last year.

Charm Lee, president of the Korea Tourism Organisation, made the announcement three days after a local television station reported that in 2012 he had visited a “soapland,” a type of Japanese brothel, in Yoshiwara, a red-light district in Tokyo.

Soaplands are widely known as thinly-disguised sex parlors where male customers receive soapy massages by naked women.

Lee denied the allegations and expressed regret over the report that he claimed was unilaterally based on an informant.

“I would like to restore my honour that has been damaged through legal procedures and I have the confidence of doing so,” Lee said in a statement.

Lee was the first neutralized Korean to ever lead a South Korean public institution.
