More and more tourists are showing preference on Antarctica, making Southland benefitted by the trend. Heritage Expeditions is organizing five consecutive trips on January and February from Bluff to Antarctica and Subantarctic Islands, one of the hidden gems to explore! The Spirit of Enderby, the flagship product Heritage Expedition starts its journey on 4the January to Auckland Island, The Snares and Campbell Island.
The Islands are the homes of different rare wildlife species. To quote Nathan Russ, Heritage Expeditions operations manager, “I’ve been travelling down there since I was 9 years old. You go down to these places and you see people’s lives change. They are unique – most New Zealanders don’t know what we’ve got down there.”
Majority of the clients for this trip belonged to overseas with 12 to 13 different nationalities. As Bluff is the main departure point of this trip, the journey also holds immense possibility to attract new visitors to Southland. To quote Warrick Low, Venture Southland tourism team leader, “Antarctica is one of those final bastions of travel for the adventurous. Fifteen to 20 years ago it was out of reach of the consumer but, with new technology, these places have become much more accessible. In the past, these kinds of holidays were considered a once-in-a-lifetime event, but now a lot of people are having major holidays all the time.”
