The city of Barcelona, which receives over 27 million tourists every year, has banned the environment-friendly ride Segways from seafront during summer. Segways are silent, enjoyable rides, which allow travelers to roam around the city smoothly.
Barcelona has decided to ban the Segways from the streets as they create hazard for the pedestrians. A fine of €90 will be charged on the travelers, who will be found with this environment-friendly ride.
Mayor’s office in Barcelona has received numerous complaint calls by citizens of Ciutat Vella, the central part of the city that receives most of the tourists. Keeping those complaints in mind, the city council has decided to ban Segways from the waterfront during summer.
Recently it has been caught in Barcelona and other cities throughout the world that tourists prefer personal mobility vehicles to take city tours. The vehicles include flying wheels, tricycles, electric scooters etc.
The mobility councilor for Barcelona, Mercedes Vidal has stated, “Technology has progressed much more quickly than any possible regulations cities could introduce.”
The city council is working on strict regulations to avoid excessive pressure on the citizens. A temporary ban has been introduced between the Olympic Port and the W Hotel. Every unauthentic vehicle has also been banned throughout the city. Tourists, who will be caught riding near the no-go area, will be facing a fine of €90. They will also be facing a fine up to €1,125 if they ride dangerously or break the speed limit of 10 km per hour.
