Exceltur which categorizes important hotel chains, travel agents, tour operators and airlines in Spain explained that tourism activity in the country will grow by 4.1 percent this year. Beforehand, it had made a forecast in an increase of 3.5 percent respectively.
The body expressed that the higher forecast was majorly due to the “strong increase in foreign demand, which was higher than forecast.”
Exceltur vice president Jose Luis Zoreda said in a recent news conference that the initial months of 2017 profited Spain because of sharp rise in visitors to all the major cities “who should have visited other European capitals but finally chose Spain” as a result of the terrorist attacks in other capitals like London and Paris. Between January and May, almost 2.7 million foreigners visited Madrid. This figure was a major jump of 19 percent over the same period in 2016, as per the latest figures from national statistics institute INE.
Side by side, coastal regions carry on profiting from western European tourists avoiding destinations like Turkey and Egypt due to security issues, according to Exceltur.
Turkey and Egypt recently have witnessed their visitor numbers to bounce back. This was majorly due to an increase in the number of tourists from the Middle East and Eastern Europe, Zoreda said.
Almost, 14 million visitors have been “loaned” to Spain by other destinations that have undergone terrorist attacks, he added.
Zoreda explained that Britons remain one of the main groups of tourists to Spain by nationality.
