Tourism attractions in Spain are extremely popular among international tourists. But not all is good for the Spanish Tourism industry. As per the data by the National Institute of Statistics, although in 2016 the Spanish tourism industry accounted for 11.1% of GDP, there are many problems surrounding the sector. Between January and November of 2016, according to the INE, Spain received 71.58 million foreign tourists, 10.1% more than in 2015.
Despite the figures, Spanish tourism industry is still very much related with the sun and beach model that above all the Europeans seek for their vacations. The country is thus a leading destination in terms of volume but not profitability. Spain is a destination increasingly known by the long-distance issuing markets, such as the Asian or Middle Eastern countries. However, the country is still an unfamiliar destination in the main distant markets, attracting only 1.2% of the tourists from these markets. Investment in promoting tourism should be strengthened towards this goal.
Spain has rich tourism resources with exciting geographical characteristics, excellent climate, numerous coastlines, orographic variety along with its varied cultural, monumental and historical offerings. Hence, the Spanish tourism sector needs to expand its connection with distant destinations to facilitate tourism.
