Spirit Airlines is reaching out to Philadelphia, adding nonstop routes to Detroit and Fort Lauderdale. The flights, which begin on April 29, will take Spirit flights to eight destinations nonstop from Philadelphia.
Spirit will fly one daily round-trip flight on both routes, but it will face direct competition. American and Delta each offer multiple daily round-trip flights to Detroit. American’s May schedule shows seven daily round-trip flights between Philadelphia and Detroit while Delta’s May schedule shows six daily round-trip flights.
To Fort Lauderdale, Spirit will go head-to-head with both American and JetBlue. American’s schedule for early May shows five daily round-trip flights between Philadelphia and Fort Lauderdale while JetBlue’s schedule shows two. American also operates numerous daily flights between Philadelphia and Miami, which is about 30 miles south of Fort Lauderdale.
Both Philadelphia and Miami are major hubs for American. The Detroit and Fort Lauderdale routes follow Spirit’s previous announcement that it would add nonstop service between Philadelphia and Los Angeles, which begins April 14. Once all the new routes begin, Spirit will fly to eight cities from Philadelphia. The others are Atlanta, Chicago O’Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Las Vegas and Myrtle Beach, S.C. “We are very pleased Spirit continues to add service in Philadelphia,” Philadelphia International Airport CEO Mark Gale added in Spirit’s statement.
