Paddy Withana, Chairman of Sri Lanka Tourism said that they are aiming an all-time record of US $ 3.5 billion for 2016 and expecting a record 2.2 million arrivals by the end of this year. Withana said that due to various tourist spots opening in the country, hotel occupancy have also gone up in recent times. Hotel occupancy levels were high for the first half of 2016 and are expected to be 77% by year end.
Mr. Withana sad that tourism is one of the key drivers for Sri Lanka’s overall growth with an upward trend. The volatile situation in Europe has also helped Sri Lanka in attracting more tourists and that’s why global names like Hyatt, Movenpick, Shangri La, OZO, Anantara, Dusit Thani and several others have opened their branches in Sri Lanka.
Existing hotels are increasing their capacities in Sri Lanka and various local players have also entered the industry. There are 33,000 star class rooms now, which will increase after several new hotels opening next year. This has given rise to new jobs as well and tourism is a major contributor for the country’s GDP. Mr. Withana said that the Port City project would have a positive effect for the country’s tourism with marina, shopping complexes, apartments and recreation facilities.
