The Minister for Fisheries, Youth Empowerment and Sports, Karnataka, Mr. Pramod Madhwaraj, launched on Thursday an eco-tourism and responsible travel effort on the beautiful St. Mary’s Island, located 6.5 kms off Malpe beach.
Under this proposal, the ecology, natural heritage and biodiversity of the island would be preserved. This will assist in improving the rating in terms of international tourism.
Tourists would be educated regarding social and environmental concerns and sustainable practices. The recycling of eco-friendly material would be encouraged along with banning of plastic items on the island.
The amenities which the island will comprise are food court, huts and gazebo, first aid assistance, covered waiting area, lifeguard duty and safety equipment, seating arrangements, an office set-up, luggage room, night security, screening at entrance gate, street lamps, information centre and a souvenir shop.
In addition, the island has provision for storing 15,000 liters of fresh water. Jet-ski, kayaking, cliff diving, snorkelling, para-sailing, circling the island, dolphin sighting, banana ride, angling, swimming and stand-up paddle water sports activities are available on the island. Under Basalt Rock Trail, tourists will have the provisions to explore Boulder Beach and Seashell Beach on the island. A Flora and Fauna Trail is also available. Cycling trails and day-time camping facilities would be provided.
