The construction of this five star hotel is expected to be finished late next year on the complex, to be built the corner of Victoria and Salisbury streets.
Prime Minister Bill English laid the foundation stone on the site.
Sudima Hotel is developers Kilmour Properties, a group of Auckland investors, who bought the property last year.
This site was previously the Strategy office building, which was demolished after the earthquakes in Auckland.
The developers was originally planned to build a hotel for hotel chain Accor under its Sebel label. But the deal was done with the Sudima chain instead. A buyer for the finished complex is being sought.
As well as the 86-room Sudima, the complex will house commercial tenants including real estate firm Knight Frank, Ignite Architects, and several professional consultancy firms.
Sudima Hotel already owns a hotel at Christchurch Airport and three others at Auckland Airport, Hamilton, and Rotorua.
The company said the new hotel was a major step in its plans to expand and invest in Canterbury and the rest of the country. This will be a hallmark in the hotel industry in Auckland.
Kilmour Properties development director Neill Barr said this hotel project was a vote of the confidence in the redevelopment of Christchurch.
Sudima Hotels and Resorts Chief Executive Sudesh Jhunjhnuwalasaid that the construction of the hotel and development of the place showed the growth of the tourism sector in Canterbury and demand for hotel accommodation. Sudima Hotels is a flagship project for the company.
