The Saudi police found a man who was roaming around the parking lot of a major hospital. As the policemen approached, the man detonated which seemed to be an explosive belt. The explosion happened roughly 33 feet (10 meters) from the consulate’s wall at around 3 a.m. local time. Two policemen reportedly had minor injuries who were then taken to the hospital. There was no reporting of how many were taken to the hospital. Fortunately, the bystanders in the parking lot were not injured. A bomb disposal unit was called who detonated three devices found in the bomber’s car.
No motive was given for the attack and the case is under investigation.
The bombing came after a week of attacks in Turkey, Bangladesh and Iraq, which have left many on edge. A similar incident in 2004 killed five people of the U.S. consulate in Jeddah which attacked by gunmen linked to Al Qaeda.
