Machu Picchu TourDiscover the spiritual side of world-acclaimed Machu Picchu that is rarely experienced by other visitors, during an in-depth tour introduced by Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel and designed to reveal the legendary site’s sacred significance.

“The Mystical Machu Picchu Experience is a fascinating journey that takes our guests far beyond the culture and history of the sanctuary,” said General Manager Angie Clavijo. “You are immersed in knowledge and insight into the mystical energy sources and magical connections of Machu Picchu with the Pachamama, or Mother Earth.”

The tour offered by the luxury property, which is located at the foot of Peru’s – and South America’s – premier tourism attraction, is led by a private guide and accompanied by an authentic Peruvian shaman from the Sacred Valley of the Incas who uses his natural gifts to reveal the cosmic world of Andean belief.  The visit begins with a mystical “Hayway” ceremony under La Roca Sagrada (The Sacred Rock). Hayway is a Quechua word, the language of the Incas, meaning a personal or physical offering to the cosmos and Mother Earth. The ceremony evokes the powerful life forces imbued in Machu Picchu, including a cleansing session with condor feathers and floral essences to vanquish negative energy. Next comes visits to sacred temples including Temple of the Condor, Temple of the Sun, Temple of the Puma and Temple of Pachamama, where the spiritual and celestial significance of each area is discussed. Traditional tour elements are also incorporated including historic insights into the Inca culture and Machu Picchu, the theories explaining how the engineering and architectural feat of building a stone citadel atop a high mountain was achieved, the flora and fauna of the region, and discussion of other temples and structures in the area.

Guests of Sumaq can more fully experience dramatic Machu Picchu because, rather than visit the historic ruins on a long, exhausting day trip from Cusco, where most time is spent in transit, the hotel’s proximity to the site makes it possible to visit at a more leisurely, relaxed pace and spend more time there as well as delve deeper into it by taking advantage of special, in-depth experiences such as the Mystical Machu Picchu tour.
