The future is very close, when a flight from Sydney to London will just take two hours of airtime. The hypersonic jet can fly in a speed that is five times more than the speed of sound. The US and Australian military research teams have coupled together to test and make this technology into a reality. 10 trials are being run at Woomera of South Australia, and at Androya Rocket Range of Norway.
Australia’s chief scientist Alex Zelinsky stated, “It is a game-changing technology, and could revolutionize global air travel, providing cost-effective access to space.”
Michael Smart of the University of Queensland informed that Hypersonic International Flight Research Experimentation (HIFiRE) scientists are currently working day-and-night to develop an engine which can fly at Mach 7. He also informed that scramjet is a supersonic engine, which uses oxygen from the air to energize the engine. For this reason, this specific jet is way lighter than the ordinary jets.
He informed, “The practical application of that is you could fly long distances over the Earth very, very quickly but also that it’s very useful as an alternative to a rocket for putting satellites into space.”
On Wednesday, the jet flew in the speed of Mach 7.5, while it reached an altitude of 278 kilometres. Throughout this test, the outside temperature of the flight was being monitored by the scientists.
Officials informed that the first trial took place in 2009 and the next would be conducted in 2018.
For now, one must keep his/her fingers crossed, in order to fly across 17000kilometres of airspace, within just 120minutes of time.
