Melbourne AirportVictorians will have the chance to practice their surfing skills or learn the popular water sport in prime conditions when Australia’s first surf park opens at Melbourne Airport.

Plans for a 320 metre lagoon that generates multiple waves every 90 seconds have been unveiled for a site on Watson Drive, Tullamarine.

This unique recreation and leisure facility will be called URBNSURF Melbourne. It will provide an authentic surfing experience with guaranteed waves, suitable for people of all ages and abilities.

Built on 7 hectares of premium land, URBNSURF Melbourne is expected to become a tourist destination attracting visitors from around Australia and the world.

In addition to the surf lagoon, URBNSURF Melbourne will include retail shops and a café. Other water activities will also be available, including a plunge pool for swimming. Classes, competitions, tailored programs and clubs will also be available.

Surfing is the second most popular aquatic sport in Australia, following swimming. It is also second only to AFL in the number of participants involved in the sport in Victoria.*

During construction, which is expected to start in the second half of this year, around 300 jobs will be created. Once open, around 45 full time equivalent jobs will be available.

Melbourne Airport will lease the land to private sport and leisure facilities company, Wave Park Group, which holds the exclusive rights to the wave generating technology in Australia.
