In a recent green meetings and events conference which took place in Germany, sustainability expert Dr. Dirk Glaesser explained the significance of sustainability in meetings and events industry. Dr. Glaesser, Director for the Sustainable Development Program of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) said that the meetings industry can act as ‘agents of change’. To quote Barbara Hendricks, Germany’s Federal Minister for the Environment, ‘’ Germany is Europe’s number one conference location – a great accolade and I warmly congratulate the industry. With success, however, comes responsibility. For the conference and congress industry this means, above all, implementing the guiding principle for sustainable development and sustainability targets at meetings, events and conferences. This sector has recognized – earlier than many other sectors – that sustainability is not a theme but an inherent feature.’’
Dr. Dirk Glaesser was accompanied by Professor Andreas Löschel, Professor for Energy and Resource Economics at the University of Münster who brought the importance of sustainability for meeting and events industry to the forefront.
On 13th and 14th February, the fourth green meetings and events conference (gme) took place at Waiblingen in the district of Stuttgart which attracted more than 250 attendees.
