Anne Christine Dunn, current Miss Pacific Islands launched a campaign on sustainable tourism on social media behalf as a representative of the South Pacific Tourism Organization or the SPTO. To quote Miss Dunn who in association with SPTO is working to promote international year of sustainable tourism for development, ‘’ Sustainable tourism for me is about preserving and sharing our unique South Pacific islands and cultures with the world. It’s about being responsible as hosts and visitors to our beautiful yet fragile island ecosystems.’’
To quote Christopher Cocker, SPTO Chief Executive Officer, ‘’ our culture, environment and our people are our greatest tourism assets and it is our responsibility to ensure their sustainability. I am pleased that Miss Pacific Islands has joined us in our initiatives to promote sustainable and responsible tourism for not just Fiji but the entire Pacific region.’’
Travelers from Pacific and other destinations across the world have been requested by the global campaign to share thoughts, photographs, stories, videos and ideas on sustainable tourism in Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with hashtags #travelenjoyrespect and #SouthPacificIslands. On May 20, winners will be declared at the South Pacific Tourism Exchange in Sydney as the trip to south pacific in on great demand. Being one of the largest tourism events of this place, it brings together tourism operators from 16 different Pacific Island countries and wholesale buyers worldwide.
