The cruise vessel was named ‘Swiss Crystal’.
It had crashed into a supporting pillar of the A42 autobalm damaging its bow while it made its way towards the Netherlands. Owing to the size of the rescue operations the number of people reported injured varied.
Of the 27 people on board who were confirmed to be injured, most of them sustained injuries as asserted by the police.
Four of those who were initially categorized as grievously injured were capable of leaving hospital on Wednesday morning.
This river cruiser had 129 people on board during the time of the accident with a majority of the passengers arriving from Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
A short while after the incident, crew and passengers were able to move onto another river cruiser that had stopped to help the affected cruise vessel.
Numerous fire department boats were also utilized for this purpose.
Uninjured passengers were capable of continuing their journey in an hour after the travel company operating the cruise offered an alternative cruise boat. Some of the passengers also stayed in the hotels nearby or were taken home according to the fire officials.
The damaged bridge is not likely to be re-opened to the road traffic prior to Wednesday as stated by a police spokesman.
He went on to add that first it needs to be checked by the structural engineers.
Currently, water police have taken over the investigations.
