Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events Stuart Ayres said Sydney Sings will showcase the finest Australian and international vocal talent at venues large and small, traditional and unexpected, from the Sydney CBD to Western Sydney.
“Sydney Sings is an exciting new concept that will showcase all genres of vocal performance from musical theatre, to choirs, folk and world music and solo performances with more than 700 performers expected to participate,” Mr Ayres said.
“The NSW Government is proud to have secured Sydney Sings through our tourism and major events agency Destination NSW, and we expect more than 11,000 visitors will travel to Sydney for the festival, delivering $5 million in visitor expenditure for NSW.”
Sydney Sings Artistic Director Leo Schofield AM, along with Executive Director Jarrod Carland said, “Singing is the oldest form of human communication. We sing when we’re happy, when we’re sad, when we need to express every kind of emotion. Our unique new city-wide event will celebrate this most potent form of communication and bringing people together.”
A highlight of Sydney Sings will be a spectacular outdoor performance of Carmina Burana with massed choirs, orchestra and dancers, one of many must-see events of the festival.
A family friendly Musical Theatre Chorus Spectacular will also be held, featuring stars of Broadway and Australian musical theatre performing hits from major musicals.
Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer Sandra Chipchase said, “Sydney Sings is set to inspire and delight with surprise performances and spontaneous fun across the city.”
Sydney Sings will be held from 28 July to 7 August 2016.
