Taiwan welcomed record number of tourists from Chinese mainland in 2015

Taiwan Taoyuan International AirportTaiwan welcomed a record number of tourists from the Chinese mainland in 2015 which stood at 3.4 million, according to a statement of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council on Wednesday.

The statement said about 9.86 million people made cross-Strait trips in total, an expansion of 4.7 percent from the year before.

There has been a surge in tourism numbers noticeably around election time in Taiwan, especially tourists from China as there are no democratic elections in China.

Taiwan is a small island nation 180km east of China with contemporary cities, hot springs resorts and dramatic mountainous terrain.

Tourism in Taiwan is one of the major industries and contributor to the economy of Taiwan. In 2014 Taiwan received more than 9.9 million international visitors, an increase from 8 million international visitors in 2013.[1] Tourism affairs are managed by the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications of Taiwan.
