According to Esthy Reko Astuti, deputy for tourism development at the Ministry of Tourism, “The activities are aimed at promoting Malay culture, as well as the maritime industry, tourism, sports and services sectors. It will also attract more foreign tourists from across the border, since Penyengat Island is located near Singapore and Malaysia.”
As per the Tourism Ministry data, more than 92,000 foreigners visited the island in 2016.
This year, the overall target for Riau Islands province is 3 million. Various competitions and festivities are scheduled, with more than 1,300 people expected to participate.
Tanjung Pinang Mayor Lis Darmansyah said there will also be several supporting events, such as Fashion Malay Penyengat Syawal Serantau, the Photography Penyengat Halal Competition and the Short Film Netizen Penyengat Halal Competition. These activities and festivities will provide entertainment for tourists and residents of Tanjung Pinang.
In addition, the Malay Fashion Carnival will feature a competition involving carnival costumes. Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said the festival is part of the government’s efforts to boost tourism in the Riau Islands, especially to nature and cultural destinations. It is also for establishing Penyengat Island as a center for the history and culture of ethnic Malay people.
