The witnesses said that the check-in area at Terminal 1 was affected by the attack.
According to the police, six people were treated for breathing problems after the incident at the country’s busiest airport.
A spokesperson added to the comment saying that the cause of the attack is unclear. The investigation is underway.
Frankfurt Airport operators said the fire brigade’s operations had ended and found no “harmful substance” in the departures hall.
The check-in has reopened and flights started operating as per the normal schedules.
The incident came less than 48 hours after a bomb scare caused a partial evacuation at Frankfurt Airport.
A previous alert was raised when a passenger entered the secured area before finishing the security checks. Germany is on high alert following the Isis-linked terror attack that killed 12 people in December.
