The 18-time Grand Slam champion will represent Switzerland for the fourth time at the mixed teams’ tournament, with his most recent involvement in 2017 making it one of the most successful events in the tournament’s history, attracting a total of 103,167 fans to Perth Arena.
The State Government, through Tourism WA has been a proud sponsor of the Mastercard Hopman Cup since its inception in 1989. The current sponsorship deal has secured the tournament in WA until 2022.
Federer, who will be once again joined by Swiss player Belinda Bencic, went on to win this year’s Australian Open following his appearance at the 2017 tournament.
The full player line-up will be announced in October.
With Federer as the drawcard, fans broke attendance records at each of his matches, with more than 41,000 people attending the Swiss team’s three sessions.
Research commissioned by Tourism WA also showed that 39 per cent of international and 43 per cent of interstate visitors said Federer was the main reason they travelled to WA for the Mastercard Hopman Cup.
Events are vital to tourism, as they attract visitors who inject millions into the economy, add vibrancy to the city and promote the State nationally and internationally through valuable media exposure.
The Mastercard Hopman Cup is a perfect example of an event that provides significant benefits to the State. For example the 2017 event generated a media value of around $68.4 million in international and domestic markets, a significant increase from the year before, providing exposure of Perth’s significant transformation to millions of potential visitors around the world.
