Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, the metropolitan police commissioner of Britain has warned about the potential risks of a terror attack in UK. He said that he firmly believes that terrorism threats are quite real and that the next victim would be Britain.
The level of terrorism threat in the UK has been quite severe ever since the year 2014. But, Hogan-Howe said that the ‘way of life and culture’ of Britain was responsible for checking terror attacks in this part of the world like those experienced in Germany, Brussels, Wurzburg and Ansbach.
The Met commissioner said that the world was horrified to catch sight of the gory terrorist attacks. However, he also said that public concern had been growing in the United Kingdom and this brought several things under the control of the authorities.
Hogan-Howe said that since the police had a close relationship with MI6 and MI5, Britain had been capable of foiling terrorism plots. He also said that strict laws in gun control also enable Britain to steer clear of violence.
In a blog post, the police commissioner also mentioned that the policies of acceptance and tolerance adopted by UK was successful in defeating terrorism.
He said that UK had increased the number of firearms officers in the nation to 2800 from 600, in order to check the tendency of a terrorist attack similar to that which took place in Paris during November 2015. About 130 people died in the attack.
He encouraged his countrymen to follow the customs, traditions and beliefs boldly and that this would send across a message to the terrorists that the people of UK were not like them, and therefore, the terrorists would never win.
