Newlands cricket ground in Cape Town will not be hosting a single match during the Indian tour this summer and Western Cape destination marketing agency Wesgro is irked and says it is bad news for tourism.
Due to certain disagreements between Cricket South Africa and Board of Control for Cricket in Indian the tour has been shortened, resulting in the city hosting no matches instead of the initially planned T20, ODI and Test match.
Wesgro CEO, Nils Flaaten says it’s disappointing for cricket fans and also for Wesgro which seeks to promote the province globally as an attractive tourist destination.
“I think one of the strengths of Newlands as a cricket ground is the visuals that are beamed out of Devils Peak and the surroundings to a global audience. That helps us with destination marketing and it makes the destination far more recognizable with international tourists.”
Flaaten says the city will lose significant direct investment.
“There are a number of South Africans from outside of the city that come here. There are plenty of corporate sponsors that bring their clients down and this negative development will definitely have an impact on the city and the cricket environment.
