The flight was carrying 125 passengers. Southwest planned to put the 125 passengers on another flight that was set to depart from New Orleans at 7:40 p.m. and arrive in San Antonio at 9:05 p.m., airline spokeswoman Emily Samuels said.
The flight had left Tampa about 2:50 p.m. CDT. Airport spokeswoman Michelle Wilcut said Southwest Flight No. 775 landed safely at Louis Armstrong International Airport in Kenner about 4 p.m. after the decision for the emergency diversion was made.
Diverting the flight to New Orleans was simply a matter of safety.
Samuels said in a statement that, they appreciate the patience of their customers during the delay of their travel plans.
The plane diverted was a Boeing 737-700 with a crew of five aboard.
