The passengers were handed over to Indonesian police at Denpasar Airport before the flight continued on to Phuket.
The Jetstar flight JQ27, carrying 314 passengers from Sydney to Thailand, landed in Indonesia to offload the drunken passengers.
Horrified passengers described seeing one of the men punch his friend in the face at least three times in front of screaming children as the crew desperately tried to calm the ‘rowdy’ group.
The Australian budget airline said in a statement that the passengers had become extremely disruptive among themselves and refused requests from the crew. The statement also said that the other customers on board supported the decision to offload the group in Bali and thanked the crew. The airline said it took safety and security seriously and would not tolerate disruptive behaviour by passengers.
Bali airport manager Trikaro Harjo said an investigation of the passengers revealed that they were under the influence of alcohol when they boarded the flight.
The airline did not disclose the genders or other details about the six passengers. It did not detail their behaviour. It’s understood that Australian Federal Police are not involved in the investigation.
Jetstar are said to be determining how the men will be sent back to Australia – either on separate flights or together.
The airline did not disclose whether they will pursue the troublemakers for the cost of the diversion.
