These young holidaymakers are often described as ‘Chinese FIT’s’ which entails free independent travelers. As per Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, Thailand’s tourism and sports minister, Chinese FIT’s travelers account for more than 60% of the Chinese travelers who visited 2016 that tantamount to 8.9 m annually.
This new trend is about to touch a huge sector of the tourism industry as these travelers spend the maximum amount money on stay and other purposes. As per official data, this upsurge took international arrivals to a record 32.5 million last year. One gets an impact of Chinese FIT’s in Khaosan Road where a mix of low-budget boutique hotels and guest houses along with Chinese shop houses changed into bars, souvenir shops and restaurants.
To quote Sanga Ruangwattanakul, chief executive of the Buddy Group, ‘”They occupy 20 per cent of the rooms during some months of the year. It is a growing market and very strong’’.
