Pongpanu Svetarundra, the ministry’s permanent secretary along with Taleb Rifai, UNWTO general secretary, signed the agreement last week during the third UNWTO World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism in San Sebastian, Spain. To quote the permanent Secretary, ‘hosting the event will help to boost Thailand’s gastronomy tourism and promote the country’s food …the forum will also provide a theoretical academic discussion, knowledge exchange with food professionals and workshop in food resources to touch and experience way of life conveying to food menus.’
It has also been pointed out that Thailand is optimist to display its talent in food security management. Also, it’s keen to share its culinary potential to the world at this said event, as part of the “Kitchen to the World” campaign. On this ground, the tourism ministry is teaming up with Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to reorder street food by bringing in activities like walking streets in the evenings and zoning street food to clear pavements in various popular tourist districts.
Though, out and out banning on street food isn’t yet prevalent as widely proclaimed by the media. But, a campaign to develop public hygiene like providing clean running water for dish washing and cooking, raising cooking standards and reduction in pavement congestion in certain areas of the city are in full swing.
