Deputy Prime Minister Tanasak Patimapragorn said the latest tourism research jointly conducted by the Tourism and Sports Ministry, Tourism Council of Thailand and Thailand Research Fund (TRF) suggests.
Cruise visitors have an average spending of 6,174 baht a day which is higher than other average foreign visitor expenditure which is 4000 baht per day. Cruise tourism in Asia has rapidly grown, especially in Asean. The research showed cruise visitors between 2015 and 2016 preferred visiting Laem Chabang and Koh Samui to Phuket.
According to the research, the government has more cooperation from the surrounding countries to create more cruise routes and that they should also invest in the human resources to have a developed service sector. The study found that Thailand is still weak on foreign languages and need skilled and quality people to cater better to the foreign tourists.
Entrepreneurs prefer to hire Filipinos, who are more diligent and have better language skills than Thais, according to the research. Entrepreneurs in food and restaurant, lodging, and spa and medical services, along with tour operators agreed that the government should develop a centre of excellence in human resource development for, as the study showed.
Bangkok, Phuket, Chon Buri, Chiang Mai, Surat Thani, Krabi, Songkhla, Phangnga, Prachuap Khiri Khan, and Samut Prakan are the top ten most competitive provinces in terms of provincial tourism management of key destinations as the study found.
To make cruise tourism one of the most attractive sectors of Bangkok tourism industry, the government approved a developmental plan a couple of years ago with the hope to raise 3.6 billion baht in 2016-17.
