The 2018 ASEAN Tourism Forum or ATF observed its 10 member countries embracing the theme related to sustainable tourism and present a collective vision in terms of growth in tourism numbers. A slew of promotion programs preplanned for the 2018 season.
Thailand, the host of ATF 2018 organized the event at Chiang Mai International Exhibition and Convention Centre (CMECC), its second largest exhibition and convention centre.
Held once a year and rotates among the 10 ASEAN countries, ATF welcomes the heads of tourism, the member countries, media and the regional and international travel trade jointly to set-up and aim on the prospects and challenges entailed in perking up the regional tourism. The conference highlighted the meetings of the ASEAN Tourism Ministers and national tourism organizations, international buyer seller meets and widespread media briefings. Particularly, for the first time, a ministerial meeting with China took place.
The series of back-to-back media briefings by the member countries of ASEAN was opened by Thailand, the host nation. Organizing for the sixth time in Thailand, ATF’s 37 year history interestingly selected Chiang Mai as venue for the first time in an offer to showcase the second largest city of the country and at the same time reflect their policy in terms of tourism for promoting Tier II and III regions.
Tourism Authority of Thailand Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications Tanes Petsuwan started by hailing ASEAN countries as Thailand’s single largest visitor source market in Asia.
Last year, Thailand greeted over 9 million ASEAN visitors with Malaysia being the largest market with arrivals reaching 3.35 million followed by Lao PDR with 1.61 million (+16.18%) and Singapore with 1.02 million (+6.26%) respectively.
