The agency was selected after a competitive bidding process attracting more than 20 applicants. “The Martin Agency is known for representing global brands,” said Rita McClenny, Virginia Tourism president and CEO.
“The award is about engaging the best and most progressive agency to bring greater success and awareness to the Virginia is for Lovers brand globally. And they have a highly regarded creative team at Martin,” McClenny added.
The multimillion contract award period is for 18 months with four, one-year options to renew. The award was made on December 15, and the contract term starts January 1.
The first Virginia tourism campaign using the “Virginia is for Lovers” slogan came in 1969 created by ad agency Martin & Woltz, led by founders David N. Martin and George R. Woltz. When Woltz left in 1975, the agency became The Martin Agency.
The Martin Agency spokesman Dean Jarrett said ‘Virginia is for Lovers’ is still one of the slogans for which the agency is popular. “Being headquartered in this great commonwealth has been a big part of our success, and we can’t wait to work with Virginia Tourism to bring more visitors to the state we love so much,” Jarrett said.
