The Department of Tourism (DOT) in the Philippines said that the government will take advantage of President Duterte’s ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin for encouraging more Russian tourists to visit the destinations in the Philippines.
To quote Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo, “Russians spend more than others and they stay for an average of two weeks with their families in the Philippines.” Teo said that Russian tourists are thought to be a high source of tourism revenue after the UNWTO in 2015 said that Russia is the world’s sixth biggest outbound market. She added that Russian tourists spend a total of $35 billion during trips abroad.
The DOT said that Russian tourists should be enticed to visit the Philippines prime destinations like Palawan, Boracay, Davao, and Siargao. To quote Teo, “We have a great advantage compared to other countries because the Russians, including President Vladimir Putin, have a great respect for President Duterte and his peace and order drive, making Philippines a safe place to visit.” DOT data showed that 28,000 Russians visited the Philippines in 2016, which was 11.6% higher than the number of Russian arrivals in 2015.
