The meeting of National Tourism Council has not assembled yet and half years much to the disappointment of tourism entrepreneurs who are influencing government to usher in new programs to that will revitalize tourism industry.
The National Tourism Council is a supreme body for institutional development of tourism in Nepal and chaired by the Prime Minister. Some of the key responsibilities involve, preparing policy guidelines, reviewing tourism plans and development, determining disputes in terms of tourism development, and forging coordination among line ministries, among many others. Nonetheless, all these works have been affected as the council has not summoned its meeting since February 14, 2016.
However, all the stakeholders of tourism have disparaged the government inactiveness for tourism development. Ramkaji Kone, a former president of Nepal Association of Tours and Travel Agents (NATTA), said that the government has been utterly unsuccessful to carry out its responsibility. To quote him, “The council has been formed for development and promotion of tourism sector. But the concerned government agencies and officials are not serious about holding its meeting. The council has a significant role in make policies and regulations for the tourism sector.’ Kone further added that the council should counterfeit harmonization among stakeholders, at the same time inspire and give confidence to the tourism entrepreneurs for tourism development. Unfortunately, the council itself has remained passive since past one and half year.
