The exhibition, which is on till Jan 24, examines how the movement of pop art sprung up in various parts of the world, including Latin America, Asia, the Middle East and Europe; and wasn’t confined to just one nation or set of artists.
This show is the result of a research project that left no stone unturned in its search to find out how different cultures contributed and reacted to pop art. For a long time it was assumed pop art was a creation and celebration of Western commercial culture. However, evidence gathered for this project shows that it was prevalent in many forms as a subversive tool for criticism and public protest.
The exhibition has brought together around 200 important works from the 1960s and 1970s, with many items on display for the first time in the UK.
